How often should you mow your lawn?

How long does it take for grass to grow?

Look, this questions has been asked for decades.

How often should you mow your lawn?

The answer is simple, it varies.

But, we will take a brief look into the factors you need to consider about your own lawn.

Should you mow the lawn once a month, or should you mow the lawn once a week?

Let’s take a look!

Mowing Frequency and the Time of Year

Mowing Frequency in Peak Season

In most places, the peak mowing season is somewhere around April to October. During peak season, a lawn should be cut twice a month, minimum.

Mowing Frequency in Off-Season

Between November and March in most areas the grass can be cut once a month or less. Most people will just cut the lawn as needed.

Some varieties of grass go dormant for the winter, and won’t need to be cut at all.

However varieties such as winter rye will need to be cut all winter long at least once or twice a month.

Which brings us to the next factor in how often you should mow your lawn.

Grass variety!

Grass Variety and Frequency of Mowing

Look, to keep it simple, for optimal results cut your lawn every week during peak season. A weekly cut leads to thicker fuller grass. But some varieties of grass grow slower than others.

Some of the fastest growing grasses include crabgrass and Kentucky blue. Which means that they must be cut on a weekly basis.

Crabgrass grows so fast in peak season that cutting it every two weeks becomes impossible. This is one for the reasons lawn care professionals hate it!

Some grasses such as rye grass also grow fast, but they don’t grow as thick. This means that even though they grow fast, it is not difficult to get through even after waiting two weeks to cut!

A good grass seed can be a good investment. Installing a good, easy to maintain seed can actually save you money in the long run.
